The Hurling Thread

From the outside I think this is a decent appointment for Waterford. I don't think they are good enough to win the All Ireland but are possibly good enough to reach the last 4 with the current crop of players they have. I think Davy will achieve that. Will that be enough for the Waterford fan base, who knows.

However as mentioned above its highly likely that at some stage, be that in winter training, after the league or in year 2 that the Waterford team will eventually down tools for him and see him out. I've already heard grumblings of discontent from a few blaas over this appointment, will some of the players feel the same???

Waterford underage would appear to be middling to poor in recent years, when this current good crop of players starts to fade out its quiet conceivable they will be down for a long time. It's now or never for them in my opinon.

They will be very dangerous next year alright but after that they will go into decline if he stays on, this is at best a 2 year gig and at worst a 1 year gig. And when the end comes it won’t end well. The blahs are known for their in fighting and metaphoric knife wielding and a lot of them have not forgiven Davy for the fiasco that was the 2008 All Ireland final

Tbf he took them to 4 AI semi finals in a row and an AI final, the last time he was there.

Messaged a Waterford pal today, he's distraught. Told him Davy was just right, with they way they played last year they need someone whose great at making excuses.

On a more analytical note. It's easy to see it falling apart here, Davy is a fella who will get people riled up, be it for or against him. But this year, if he gets the team on side... it could go really well.

For all the knocks you can say about them, this Waterford panel is probably the most talented they've had in forever. Its packed with good hurlers, but the mental side just so often not there with them. As a manager Davy can get you motivated and going and this time it could be just the right timing for them to come together.

You still have the shadow of Limerick looming over them and the cycle of Davy is well known, perilous waters after year 1. But this year?

Might put a tenner down on them.

Keep the money in your pocket, Davy's robotic style will not suit those players and he will know all about it. His Wexford teams were awful to watch, only maybe the Dub's were harder on the eye.

The Dublin hurling folk were delighted with this news. There was a real fear that he was coming..

The danger is he gets a bounce in his first year which he has done before (so he has). The difficulty is that there has to be 2 teams dont make it out of Munster and Waterford have been so obliging of late.

Lot of chat online about all the money he's getting. How much of the talk about money is exaggerated?
Im not so sure inter county managers get the level of money people think.
For Davy I'd say management is an addiction at this stage. With Cork camogie he could only have been getting basic expenses at best, the camogie simply wouldn't have the money to be splashing it about

People make up their own figures to suit their agenda. Davy rubs people up the wrong way, in the same way Donal Og seems to, but the man is a hurling fanatic at heart like a lot of us. People's passion comes out in all sorts of ways. Anyone who has worked under him or know him will tell you how much he cares about the players. He's also one of the better hurling brains

Personally would have loved to see how he would've got on with the Cork lads but only if Pat didn't want the job.
