Sony to sell off PC Business

It could have been so much different for them.

Steve Jobs wanted Sony's Vaio computers to run Mac OS X

Despite stamping out the once-popular Mac clone program upon his return to Apple in the late 1990s, Steve Jobs a few years later reportedly flew to Hawaii to pitch executives of Japanese electronics giant Sony on the idea of selling Mac-compatible VAIO computers

Even if they had moved from the mini discs to flash storage in time, they might have been able to muscle in on the apple share of the music market, and subsidise the other areas of the company.

Apple were trying to flog the Mac OS to everybody at the time:

The Power Computing PowerTower Pro, faster and cheaper than the equivalent Mac from Apple (which also looked like a ball of shite...)

Jobs shut all of this licensing down shortly after he retook the reigns of power.

As for Sony, I'm slightly surprised by this, but happy to see it.

They were trying to get a unified "look and feel" across all of the Sony ranges, Vaio, Bravia, Xperia, Walkman, Playstation and so on. The idea being that they could have a rake of features that only work with other Sony kit, prompting people to buy more Sony kit.
Basically, what Apple do.

Doing that on top of generic Android & Windows is tough though, and every schmuck in the electronics hardware business is trying to do that too (c.f. Samsung Kies).

It strikes me as weird to be ditching a laptop business while saying that they're focusing on mobile. Done correctly, laptops are as much a part of the mobile sector as phones and tablets. Tablets and laptops are merging, so surely that should have been the approach to make.

Yes, but this was four years later when Jobs made the offer - he liked the style of the VIAO range and considered it worthy of Apple OS.
