First off, this is not about right v left wing politics. Many European countries like Sweden, Norway, Holland, Germany and Austria are taxed and serviced in a socialist model but are socially very orientated to the right so let's not get bogged down by labels.
The question I want to ask (hypothetical, pretend we're not in major debt and starting from scratch) is would people be willing to put up with much higher direct taxes like the above mentioned countries?
Or do you think the PD model of taxing consumption instead of wages & profits is the better way to go?
Personally, having lived in one of the above for over a year now I'm more in favour of the Euro model myself, though with the caveat that it punishes the frugal more than the PD model.
