With the current energy crisis and Ireland's commitment to reduce its carbon footprint, there is a need to consider how we are going to meet the energy demands of the future. As far as positives go nuclear power's biggest advantage is tied to the simple fact that it does not depend on the fossil fuels. Coal and natural gas power plants emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere contributing to climate change. With nuclear power plants carbon dioxide emissions are minimal. As for negatives, historically mining and purifying uranium has not been a very clean process and there is the added concerns of waste and threats of contamination

I think there is a good argument for bringing more gas power online in Ireland, from a point of view of emissions a combined cycle gas and steam recovery system is better for the environment than straight gas power plant an example being Tynagh Mine Power Station in Galway http://www.tynaghenergy.ie/

From a nuclear power point of view the fission reaction also works off the steam generation and is better for the environment than conventional thermal power stations. Currently about 18% of the worlds power is from Nuclear Power Generation.

Currently in development is the new Very High Temperature Reactors (VHTR's) which I believe is being called the Next Generation Nuclear Plant which is been aimed to open in 2020ish. Also ongoing is a hybrid program called Generation 4 aiming to make it safer and cleaner but thats another 15 or 20 years off yet.

Ireland should embrace it and hopefully the smelly fucks in Rossport can go down and protest against that and let Corrib make money for a badly fucked economy.

My 2 cents

I've no objections to nuclear in principle, but I don't know if it makes sense for Ireland.

The amount of support infrastructure means a very heavy investment and you need 4+ reactors to make it worthwhile. To go nuclear would mean going 80%-90% nuclear and that leaves us almost more vulnerable to supply shocks than our current set up.
