Provence

Proving to be a very popular thread PR Feen. Do they have tumbleweed in Provence? But seriously, food in provence is not going to be an issue. Eat everything and wash it down with this fortified grape juice stuff they tend to flog by the bottle.

all great spots, grew up in Frejus (between Marseille and Monaco)

if you've enough time, try to see Nimes (arenas), Orange, Carpentras and more south maybe Cassis (around Marseille and les Calanques)

Around Nice, there are some lovely sots too, Grasse, Menton, Roquebrune

If you go further north there's Gap and Briancon, just outside Parc National des Ecrins

great nature and class for outdoor activities

foodwise, shotloads to choose from the obvious ones would be some special bread called Fougasse (pronounced 'foo-gas'), the Marseille special, la Bouillabaisse (fish stew) and Ratatouille (Nice specialty, vegetable mix)

Loads of delicatessen, hams, saucissons

Loads of different types of Olives and deserts (try a tropezienne in a boulangerie)

tons of different red and white when it comes to wine but rose wine can also be appreciated fully, Bandols are lovely

Just go a Leclerc, Carrefour, intermarche and look around and see the great choice of fish, meats, bread, cakes, wines, beers etc way better than anything in ireland in my book, their veg is like its straight picked. Carrefour is the luxury one, and for real bargains but very good quality try leader price!. Ive gone to france on holidays for years.
