Plans to extend Cork City boundary

http://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/extension-of-cork-city-boundary-into-county-region-under-review-1.2067493

So this has been discussed for the best part of a decade without any actual development of the plans.

Can anyone see this happening in the next 5 years and what will be the implications?

I have heard it from decent sources that a full on merger is very much on the cards.

Wouldn't be delighted to see a merger, but a new Metropoltian Council to replace the City Council, taking in the CASP area, would be a very welcome.

The national government should be taking a major interest in doing this properly as the country is in dire need of an economic counter balance to Dublin.

About time.

Seriously required for future planning and development of the region.

2 Councils at cross purposes for too long now

Cork County Council had to apply to Cork City Council to extend the County Hall etc.

In the Echo yesterday a report said most Councillors in County Council are in favour of amalgamation of both Councils. The other preferred option would be a vert limited extension of the City boundaries, so not going out as far as Ballincollig or Carrigaline.

Was trying to organise an event before that was going cross both sides of the boundary, feckin nightmare trying to satisfy both Authorities in terms of licensing, health and safety etc in often quite different ways.

Cork needs to be under one boss, with one set of policies, with 2 or even 3 administration areas.

Full report from independent committee headed by Alf Smiddy is due in September.

One proposal even mentioned extending the city boundary to 45mins from city center. This was bonkers really as it would potentially have Youghal, Fermoy, Bandon and Macroom in the city.

Of all the proposals it seems to boil down to two.

1. Amalgamation.
2. Limited extention, taking in parts of Douglas, Togher, Glanmire.

The second one is very conservative and not really going to reap major benefits either way imo.

Both are shit to be fair
