? No Irish owned insurance companies, apart from PMPA, back then. Even Irish National were French owned afaicr.
Oops..ICI were Irish owned until bought out by AGF in the late 1980s.

A levy was added to all insurance policies to pay for the cost of PMPA when it went bust IIRC. Might even still be there!

Yep 3%. Not sure if it was applied to life assurance policies though.
If the levy hadn't been applied there would have suddenly been a huge number of uninsured drivers in ROI.
