Decent film here from Eamon Glavin, Irish-American college oarsman, about the last chance saloon for Olympic qualification at Lucerne this year. It's a bit amateur/corny in places and he didn't have access beyond the bank of the lake, but there's some very good footage of the rowing and the emotions of the winners as well as those who didn't make it.
The Irish boats feature prominently, including a great sequence (starts at 5:16) of the women's IV doing a fast piece during warmup. The finals are off the charts – yer man is right down at the finish line and captures the joyous elation of those who make it as well as the despair of those who just miss out. The essence of elite sport is really captured in that sequence of races. The joy of the women’s IV (13:06) and the raw emotion of Margaret Cremen in the bow of the lightweight double (starts at 19:24) is in stark contrast to the non-qualifiers – years of training and they’ve fallen agonizingly short.
Definitely worth getting a cuppa and sitting down to watch the whole thing.
