Man Claimed Drink Was Refused As He Was Not Gay

A middle aged man who was refused drink at a gay bar claimed he was a victim of traveller discrimination, and later claimed he was being discriminated against because he was not gay.

At the height of William Faulkner's attempts to be served drink at Flux Bar on MacCurtain Street, he claimed that he actually was gay and kissed the hand of the man with him as if that was proof. Faulkner later threatened the bar man that he would put his head through the wall and set fire to the premises. Subjected to such threats, Bar Manager Dave Hanlon was forced by Faulkner to write a note admitting that he had refused to serve him on the basis that he was not gay.
Garda Norbert Eames, later charged Faulkner with threatening and assaulting the bar manager. The assault was in the nature of putting him in fear, and it was accepted at Cork Circuit Court that there was no physical assault. Judge Con O' Leary adjourned sentencing to give Faulkner an opportunity to gather €500 compensation for Mr. Hanlon. The money was brought to court and Faulkner was given a suspended three month on the assault charge and was fined €150 for being threatening and abusive.
Faulkner, 46, went into the Flux bar on March 4 2007 with two other men. Mr. Hanlon refused to serve them as he was of the view that they were intoxicated. Mr. Faulkner clained that he was being refused service because he was a traveller and threatened to put Mr. Hanlon's head through the wall and "torch" the bar. The barman then explained to Mr. Faulkner that Flux was a gay bar and might not suit Mr. Faulkner and his two friends. At this point Faulkner announced that he was gay and kissed the hand of one of the men with him. The defendant then forced Mr. Hanlon to write a note stating that he had refused to serve Faulkner because he was not gay. Mr. Hanlon wrote the note after being threatened that he would be killed if he did not.
