For what is my experience, Ireland has one if not THE worst public transport system in Europe. Buses are very expensive, often they're dirty and the timetable is a joke.
In the end I got a car that I use basically only to go to my office and back.

However, to be fair, the drivers are very nice, which is a plus.

I think they are. If I ask for directions, they let me know where/when to get off. Sometimes they let me get off the bus even though the bus stop is further away.
This doesn't happen in other countries, or at least it's not always the case.
Try to do that on a London bus, good luck with that.

Cork City had a tram system and light rail for some of the suburbs etc.

Yes, it was know as the Muskerry Tram. Ran from around where the River Lee hotel now stands, out the Western and Carrigrohane roads.

Cork City Council have proposed in the past (2007-08 ) an east-west alignment for a guided bus line which could be upgraded to a light rail system. I believe, without googling it to refresh my memory, that there is a proposed route running Bishopstown-Western Rd-Partrick St and down into Mahon.
