Junior A Hurling Championship 2024

Mid Cork hurling kicks off this weekend and only 3 games on, only the 3 groups of 3 teams with only 9 teams in the competition.
I love the group format but doesn’t suit the low numbers, maybe next year likes of Uibh Laoire & Cloughduv 2 might come up to expand the horizon. Predictions for games this weekend:

Dripsey V Eire Og, Close one but Eire Og to shade it

Grenagh V Kilmichael, Grenagh by few scores

Ballinora V Blarney, Ballinora handy W

Wouldn't be paying the extra fee to any of these games as a neutral to be honest. Semi finals/Final is where we might get some good games.

Really good point on the small groups. It really only works when there's a minimum of 4 teams. Not sure if the schedule would allow but with 9 teams, 2 groups with 4/5 teams in each with the top 2 in each progressing to semi-finals would be a better format.

I'd have Dripsey to beat Eire Og this weekend by a point or two and other 2 games will be very one sided I think.

I agree. My general comment is that a lot of the groups at Junior A are fairly pointless. Looking across the various divisions you clearly have obvious winners etc. In some places you’ve 11 teams and still 8 going forwards to QFs.

Kilshannig 2-15 Ballyhea 0-10
Killavullen 3-22 Araglen 1-13
Ballyhooly 1-21 Shanballymore 0-14

Clon 0-23 Oliver Plunkett’s 1-14
Ballinascarthy 1-14 Newcestown 0-16
Kilbree 1-23 Randal Og 1-17
Colums 2-12 Dohenys 1-14

Belgooly 1-18 Courceys 0-14

Newmarket 1-30 Kilbrin 5-12

Newmarket game sounds the most interesting, 5 goals conceded and still win with a big score up, Bal only scraping over Newcestown also, thought they’d be starting better this year given they won division 7 of the county league.

Great work with the results Patman. Newcestown 2nd time have always been competitive so not so much a surprise I would think. With their seniors playing today they possibly also had lads playing who would be coming on today which would have made them stronger as well.

Cheers, was talking to a few of them at the senior game against Fr O’Neills earlier and they did seem surprised at how poor Ballinascarthy were relative to the team put out, but I wouldn’t know the ins and outs of their players.
