Very young age to go. The bloke had put in great work as a coach I believe and not just with elites. He helped many a club runner and gave time and advice, from what I hear.

I do remember the 84 LA marathon, Jeez, for a few kms it looked like we might have two battling for medals. Crazy stuff. Such a shame that he won't get to enjoy retirement and travel and family.

I remember David Coleman commentating on the LA race furiously searching his list of runners when the leading bunch were at c. 20 miles exclaiming loudly "it's Kiernan, the Irishman". Great memories of a top athlete and pundit.
