Situation in Iraq and environs is pretty appalling, and it's difficult to see a positive outcome. Foreign intervention looks attractive as an option on the face of it, but let's not forget that foreign intervention has a lot to answer for in terms of breathing life into groups like ISIS to begin with. Where would they have recruited from in Iraq had it not been for the occupation?
And the situation is further complicated by the extremely hostile attitude of the Turkish regime to Kurdistan. The Kurdish zone seems (to my knowledge at any rate) to have been the most stable and successful part of Iraq since the occupation began. But the Turkish state is a powerful player here, and who would they choose between ISIS and a strong, successful Kurdistan? I am not sure.
Then you have Iran, which in league with the Shia majority in Iraq seems to me best placed to take on ISIS successfully. But who will support Iran expanding its influence in the region? Not, presumably, the US, Israel, or Saudi. Nor, indeed, the Sunni minority in Iraq, even those who abhor ISIS.
I fear the region is in for a torrid time ahead.
