Is UCC Causing Cork city's Homeless Crisis?

Some third level institutions have been accused of hiking up the cost of on-campus accommodation ahead of the introduction of the caps. UCC has recorded some of the highest rent hikes, according to figures compiled by the Irish Independent, with its prices jumping by between 10 and 11.5 per cent.

It should be remembered that rent increases on this scale drive up rent asking prices elsewhere in the city.

It is a savage increase, but has to be seen in the context of the colleges' reduced income from the state.

Handy earner for the developers who availed of serious tax breaks in building student flats.

If they cant afford the accommodation let them go away and work for a year or two to save for it or apply for a trade or the civil service.

The hopelessly inept Fine Gael government and UCC are conspiring to drive up rents in Cork even further. This sort of development will only increase homelessness within Cork city. The location is very bad news for working class people living in Cork. It will only lead to soaring rents and more traffic congestion and pollution.

The city centre needs more accessible public amenities and affordable and social housing. Not this sort of development!
