Fracking

In other news, Germany recently paid €100 per MWh to disconnect its renewable capacity from the grid due to massive overcapacity.

Brownouts are feared this winter too.

Do they have to frack to do what it ever it is they want to do?

Yes. Put simply, fracking is the method whereby hydrocarbons (oil and gas) are removed from the reservoirs they're in. What people are getting their knickers in a twist about is onshore shale gas fracking.

A nice ironic twist to this is that the higher price of gas* is increasing coal burning in Germany, resulting in a rise in CO2 output.

Law of unintended consequences n all that...

*combined with the botched carbon credit trading scheme, the unacceptable variability of peak supply in renewables and the decommissioning of nuclear.

The power companies have the UK government over a barrel. They are refusing to build the necessary gas fired power stations, unless the government increase its subsidy for them.

The gas fired power stations will be required when the wind drops off. They will not be required when the wind is blowing. So makes the gas stations very uneconomical. Hence the subsidy requirement.

If taxpayers knew the real cost of wind generated electricity, they would be up in arms.

Germany has some of the lowest wholesale prices in Europe, but some of the highest customer prices, nigh on half the cost of energy in the Germany is now renewable subsidies.
