Cork Hurlers - Part 2

The problem with the subs is that they have no incentive to perform. For the likes of Shane Kingston and Conor Lehane, you can put in a man of the match performance and still get dropped! It's a tough problem to solve because it's obvious that neither offer much when they do start. But how do you incentivise a player who'll only ever be a sub? Maybe tell him how close he is to winning an AI medal and how the team won't win without him? Start him at half time rather than on 50 minutes?
It’s not a 15 man game anymore. Every player on the panel are well aware of that. Lehane started last week because Harnedy was injured, Harnedy has done more than enough this year to come straight back in. One swallow doesn’t make a summer. As for Kingston he knows his role now and has adapted very well to coming on as a sub. We’ve all seen his performances when started

You wouldn’t be a glass half full type by any chance?!

You were telling us Offaly were going to be a big challenge, and then that Dublin could beat us. We put both away handy, and are through to the semis where the serious business starts. Can we beat Limerick? Who knows but we will step up, raise our game, and see if it’s enough

As for managing subs.. this is basic coaching. Team sports are no longer about 11/15 players. You have starting teams and finishing teams, you explain this to the players and they buy in or they don’t. Not sure why this is an issue for us now, we have decent options off the bench which is what every county would want!
Spot on ?

Another poor performance. The problem with the subs is that they have no incentive to perform. Another thought - fuck RTE and their pro-Dublin bias! We all know that it'd be great if Dublin too to hurling. But you have to appreciate what you have too. Were it not for the Cork hurling public, the Q-finals of our primary competition would've been played in front of a half dozen from Wexford for Wexford and a few curious crows! Whatever kind of occasion that was - it was made by the Cork crowd. How about a small bit of appreciation for what you have instead of a few bitter hacks begrudging our enjoyment of the game?
How do you incentivize a sub? How about the concept that playing well as a sub helps your team? Everyone on a team has a role. If all you care about is starting and not helping the team in the capacity you find yourself in then you shouldn't be on the team. I don't believe the players have this attitude by the way. I'm responding to your question. Did Shane Kingston have starting on his mind or beating Limerick when he made the season saving run?

Why? He's had 2 poor displays in a row. You say yourself the result was never going to be anything other than a Cork win. So you'd surely expect your full forward to get on scoreboard in a game that's never in doubt?
I'm still hopeful he'll do well vs Limerick but there has to be a small question mark after these two weekends.
Like I said anyone with half a clue...
Read PR's comments post game.
He's been ill.
He got clotheslined any time he got near the ball and he occupied about 3 defenders.
The fact he played at all is to his credit.
If he's fully recovered there won't be any question marks about him v Limerick.

Hayes was brilliant against Limerick. If they plan on the same strategy he can't be dropped. I'm a huge O'Flynn fan but not sure he's ready to go 60 min yet.
Needs to start catching some of those high balls, the strategy of batting them down hasn't really been working v Offaly and Dublin, they're not being latched onto like they were v Limerick

Imagine someone told us we would be in this position coming home after the Waterford game . We would have bitten your hand off . Time now to go for it . Credit to PR and the players for the journey so far . Not over yet .
A great post, well worth keeping that in mind

Probably more a glass half-empty :)

I expressed concerns about complacency creating sub-par performances and potential defeats in both of the last ties. As I said before each, I still expected Cork to win, but not nearly as easily as some seemed to think. I think maybe the last two sub-par performances (today's could even have led to defeat) might have proven my comments had some validity, without being entirely correct?

I think posters need to understand that what we write on here might bleed into the panel. If people actually believe that nobody from the 50 odd people associated with Cork ever bothers to read this stuff, I think they're wrong. If you assume that none of their families, friends, girlfriends etc, read it, you're even more wrong. Numerous retired GAA players from many counties have recalled knowing 'what was said around the county' in their time. This forum is an important part of what's said around the county. Even if they don't read it, they hear about it. I always tell the truth as I see it, even when I feel that big heads might lead to underperformance - which they did!

For all of that, I'd be far less concerned about an underperformance against Limerick. They are the only team to beat them this year and they're already being written off. Plus, even though they won today's game, and brought the great bulk of the fans, they got fuck all credit from a media that seems to hate them. That's got to hurt.
