Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Really?

This is the depth of your argument?

'I've a better understanding because of the level I played at', you're just a hurler on the ditch'.

Jesus wept. I'd say learn how to support your point m8 rather than automatically ploughing into such a dead end.
The depth of my argument has already been explained to you.

I'm now seeing why you're not getting it, and in doing so explaining to everyone else why you don't get it. I was only trying to help you understand to be honest. There's no malice in my posts.

I'm not sure I'd put it quite as strongly as that, but you're right that the team do take too much out of the ball, especially around the half-back line. Great when it works, but too often the ball was going to a man already marked, or the man in possession tries to break one tackle too many. In the first twenty minutes or so Limerick seemed to be getting a lot of turnovers or at least slowing Cork down, only for some dreadful shooting they would probably have been level before Kingston's first goal.

That said, there were far more positives than negatives. The scoreline at ht flattered Cork, but their use of the ball in Limerick's half, the off-the-ball movement and the shooting were all excellent. Lehane and especially Barrett worked like dogs, the latter got on some amount of ball. Keane was very quiet, not much ball seemed to go his way but I would rather Twomey or O'Brien start next day out. There's a couple of positions to be nailed down in the forwards and I think they need to look at the other comparable options.

The midfield balance with Fitz and Joyce is v nice, Fitz bombing forward and Joyce sweeping back, together with Millerick he provided a lot of cover to Coleman. I still have my doubts about Coleman at 6 but if he is going to go there it is crucial that he gets that extra support. Daire O'Leary was solid, not exceptional but a reasonable debut.

On Limerick, I very much doubt they were taking it easy. I imagine what's worrying Kiely is the failure of newer players to step forward to claim a spot or even put pressure on the starting XV. I wouldn't be writing off the likes of O'Neill just yet, but apart from his goal yesterday he didn't look up to speed.
By all accounts there was a bust up in the Limerick dressing room

So what team are we looking at for Saturday night? Daire O Leary has to hold onto the full back slot, Joyce at 7 and Millerick at 8 again. I’d be giving Downey a start too to keep him in the frame. Maybe a half foward line of CCahalane CLehane and STeomey with Hoggy Barrett and Jacko inside

The word is moot. Anyway, being a great athlete helps against the likes of Kyle Hayes etc.
They also don't sign lads to play hurling ;) They sign the best athletes to compete in a sport where Keane has all the attributes to play, much like football here. To be honest your comparison is kind of mute as so many Irish male players have made zero impact on the sport there and come home. Great athletes don't necessary make you a great aussie rules player or hurler for that matter.

The workrate Cork showed yesterday, if I'm being honest, is not something I believed this group had in their locker. I felt the workrate had improved drastically over the last 2 years but yesterday was a step up again. Our tackling has come on leaps and bounds. It was noticeable against Offaly too but they were so poor it was hard to measure if it was the real deal. Barrett, Fitzgibbon, Coleman, O Donaghue, Millerick and O Mahoney absolutely tore into Limerick. O Mahoney wasn't as productive as in other games but christ he let a Limerick lads know he was about. I was delighted with Lehane, Give me 35 minutes of that from Lehane any day of the week over 70+ minutes of hanging back and hitting 4 or 5 loose balls over the bar. He drove Hannon into the ground in that 1st half.

I was delighted with the bite in Cork yesterday. Thrilled with how hard we hit them and thrilled that it wasn't always within the rules either. Only other team I've seen front up to Limerick like that in the last 18 months is Waterford. There will be mayhem down the pairc on Easter Sunday. Its plain these 2 teams don't like each other one bit.

Joyce was excellent again yesterday. Millerick is a great defender and Sean O Donaghue is 2cd only to Sean Finn in my opinon as the best corner back in the country currently. Kudos too to Daire O Leary too. Making his debut against the champs in their own patch and held his own v an All Star in Flanagan and in the second half looked like he was man marking Cian Lynch which allowed Millerick free to hurl more ball.
Patrick Collins who I'm critical of in recent weeks looked to be back in the right headspace and was pinging some great ball out.

Word of warning though. The scoring return in the 2cd half was not good. Not good by a long shot. Also Limerick have 3 players that make them tick. If anyone of Nickie Quaid, Gearoid Hegarty or Cian Lynch are missing then Limerick are in big trouble. Yesterday 2 of them 3 were missing. Quaid in particular is absolutely irreplaceable for them. Different game yesterday if he's in goals for them.

Cork can only beat what's in front of them so for now we will happily take yesterday's performance. Learn what we are capable of when the work rate is manic. Go all out to win next Saturday, guarantee us semi final place and rest a few lads for Wexford the following week.

I'd go same team again as yesterday with possibly Twomey or Colin O Brien in for Mark Keane. However if Keane starts again I'd have no issue with that either. While I have my reservations about him as a hurler there's no point in writing him off this early in his development and besides the young lad is game and works hard.
