Cork Footballers

He scored 2 points v Donegal in horrible conditions, got 15 minutes v Louth, unused sub v Fermanagh, Meath and Armagh. Got 2 minutes v Kildare plus whatever extra time.
Hardly a good shot at winning a place on an average team but we'll have to trust Cleary and Co, if they think he's not good enough.
My problem with that scenario is the length of time he's warming the bench if there's a better player around. He shouldn't be a sub if he's not good enough to at least get a fair trial in a competitive match.
I am sure he has played countless in house games and challenge games too. If he was good enough then he would be being picked. Same goes for posters on about Meehan. He is clearly not in good form if he’s not being picked.

There might have been a time when it was not the best 15 being selected but I do think the best and more importantly, in form 15 are playing and that’s probably why the gap to the better sides is being bridged.

I agree with the first 15 up to a point but I think there is certainly a pattern with the use of subs that can’t be based on form when they come on, if your playing a packed defence bringing on a fella who can’t kick accurately but runs isn’t sensible but must be pre planned and the fact that there are half a dozen regular subs who have got next o zero game time is just wrong imo, if they go out on Sunday there are a lot of older player show have decisions to make and a serious cohort of players underneath that with negligible experience of playing at this level

I was speaking with work colleague yesterday and he can't believe how poorly conditioned Cork seem to be. His take was, Cork were more than well in it v Kerry, completely gassed with 10-15 mins to go. Donegal, on the ropes near the end. Tyrone dropped off with 10 to go again.
I tried to say that this was due to the effort put in to get to 60 mins and be still in the game, he didn't agree.

I was speaking with a former work colleague (and Donegal supporter, and former competitive running athlete) beside me at the Cork-Donegal match, and he could hardly believe the level of effort Cork players put in. His summary of the game was: "Cork worked their socks off".

OK, one work colleague vs another work colleague is neither here nor there. However, I haven't seen evidence in the past few years of the Cork football team being inadequately aerobically fit relative to teams they have played - previous to that perhaps yes (but even then it can be hard to tell from the sideline watching as it could be as you say in respect of over-effort in the prev 60 mins).

There’s nothing wrong with the conditioning now. It has improved vastly in a short period of time.

We didn’t run out of steam against Kerry and Tyrone because of conditioning. Both teams formed a defensive block and we got ragged trying to find ways to break it down. We just don’t have the shooters to punish a defensive system and this is my fear against Louth on Sunday.

That said, playing Division 1 would help align our conditioning with that of the top teams even better. A bit of an issue is that when we start Walsh, Maguire and O’Callaghan in the same team we are limited with options to give fresh legs to that area of the team which is crucial.

Daniel O Connell is flying it again with Kanturk after some very bad injuries.I dont see why he couldnt have been brought into the training panel at the least to see how he goes.Id like to see powter back to 5 and Meehan come into half back line he has never let cork down.Tommy walsh back into the corner with Mahony and I dont know why Kevin O Donovan is not there also.He would have been a good option to put on McCurry the last day.

I think O’Donovan is injured or was injured anyway. I honestly think the management have their ears to the ground when it comes to players in form around the county and are willing to give players a chance. O’Connell would have a lot to prove yet to be drafted into the matchday panel. He’s better off with his club at the moment.

On Sunday I think we need to opt for another shooter at the expense of some graft. For that reason I would start Hurley(if fit) in place of Paul Walsh. Could maybe do with a bigger attacking threat than Shanley at wing back too.
