Cork Footballers

Your not comparing like with like, last year due to a weird system losing one game out of three landed us in a relegation match, and I’m not saying last year was good it wasn’t, it there is zero sign of improvement. Having 9 starters still available doesn’t exactly back up your argument I would say as that would seem about average for a lot of teams
Neither is anyone else...that's my point.

This current group, minus their two best defenders & leaders in Powter & Meehan, plus the others that are out injured, retired, opted out, dropped etc have been shoved straight into the deep end.

If the players we have left at our disposal for the last two games avoid relegation it would be phenomenal and a far greater achievement than last years late spurt victory v Westmeath.

Can't wait for 1pm next Sunday to shout them on. Hopefully Hayes & O'Mahony are in a position to start.

The problem with getting it as badly wrong as this group have in 2022 is that your set up totally fucked the following year playing division 3 and glorified Tommy Murphy cup, so in your words Hank 2023 was always going to be a write off.
The team is a shambles, it’s surely not too much to hope that a cork football team could do the basics like defend in a system and work their kickouts? We’ve heard a lot about fitness but it certainly isn’t getting better quick anyway never mind that incredibly we seem to have accelerated our injury count….now why is that? As a sign of how bad things are we have had 5 league games and 5 centre backs…..thats farcical stuff….. competitive in division 2 is surely not beyond a decently prepared cork team? Not winning or getting promoted but keeping it kicked out to the likes of Meath and Roscommon , we have been miles off the pace in every facet of the game so far with the possible exception of Clare who must be kicking themselves for dropping a point to cork -a coherent game plan with committed players and work from there would be a start but too late now it seems
Just watched it on delayed and agree wholeheartedly.
We have two methods of defending - out and out fouling or just shadowing without putting any physical pressure on.
It's a diabolically set up team. You have no idea where the next score is going to come from.
If you didn't know any better these lads show up training 3 times a week for a leisurely game of backs and forwards amongst themselves.
Shooting with the wind was mind bogglingly bad. An example, Sherlock nailed a 45 from the ground. 5 mins later won a free 5 yards closer and proceeded to fuck it wide out of his hands (don't get me started at some of his other efforts in particular)
Outside of anything else, basic ball handling skills are atrocious. How many times did we turn over the ball from bad control by badly hopping or soloing the thing?

Is Brian Harnett still injured we need him and colm O Callaghan midfield for Down.
Id put Maguire and Brian hayes in the half forward line next Sunday with Daniel O Conell with them.

Leave Cathail O Mahony,Hurley if fit and Sherlock inside.

The 6 backs god only knows.Down have lively forwards just have to win and hope Roscommon beat offaly and give us a chance In a one off game with Offaly.

Daniel o Connell is still injured and Brian Hartnett will not be ready either for next week. I don't think Brian has shown he is midfield material . He was very very poor for UCC in the sigerson and was poor for Douglas in last year championship

I just think we need to bulk up the half forward line and move Maguire there and find a midfield pairing.

We need to stay in Division 2 if we go down could end up in division for years to come and will lose loads of players who will play club only or go hurling it would not be a good place to be in.

I don't think anyone was expecting miracles but we won 3 games out of 4 in division 2 last year, in admittedly different circumstances, but people are entitled to raise an eyebrow at what's going on.

That said given the turnover in players and management over the last decade and the 'new lows' that seem to be hit every year I think 3 or 4 years of relative continuity , especially regarding conditioning might be the only thing left worth trying. And with the hurlers going well they'll probably be left alone to do it as it's doubtful the board will lose too much sleep over the footballers is the depressing truth.

We are in year 4 of the county boards 5 year plan. https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/ga...to-become-football-contenders-again-1.3752426

Under normal circumstances Cork should be playing some of there league games in Clon, probably can't do it with the debt on the Pairc and the 10 year tickets.

Brian Hartnett had a very good year last year in his first year involved like many others has in jury problems this year ...
We simply have to win our next two games going to div 3 and the Tailteann Cup equals disaster put us back more years and lets face it does Keith Ricken want to go down as the manager behind the first Cork football team neaver to play for the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in history not very good for the CV.
Sad days for Cork Football but you get the feeling that nobody realy cares at the top , as someone has already said this sport is not taken as serious as Hurling, Soccer and Rugby in this County because if it was we would be a Div 1 county at all times at the very least.

I’m not sure there’s a better solution in Cork than Ricken. Not someone substantially better anyway I’d say but he’s been picked now, is insisting on giving youth a go and that will most certainly require plenty of time as they most certainly need a lot of conditioning work among other things.

He could maybe have kept a few of the older, strong players like Deane around. Deane wasn’t a world beater but he is powerful and we’d certainly do with him around the middle now. He possibly wrote off one or two a bit soon and other managements before him did similar and went down badly after it.

The return of O’Mahony was the only bright point of today. He looked fit and he looked fairly sharp. Hopefully he can progress further and help to get a win against Down next weekend.
