Cork city has gone to the dogs.

Jesus I think you're right, she'd always be on the doorstep outside An Cruiscin Lan inhaling God knows what out of an aerosol can
She asked me for some money when I was passing her on the doorstep around there, and as I bent down to give her some I saw the aerosol. She gave a nice smile & thanked me and I talked to her about the aerosol, just saying that you need to get off that stuff before it really harms you. She just smiled back and thanked again. I really felt for her. I know she's one of many but it stuck with me afterwards. Poor girl.

I'd go into the shop there on the corner of South Main Street and Washington Street late after work, I've seen her sit outside on the ground regularly and get her a box of wedges if they had anything left. You'd see some right dodgy heads around that shop late at night.

Awful business.

As people rightly ask where the hell are the cops?

That's tragic. Poor woman. RIP

I work in the city centre and we were only saying in the office last week that there has been a noticeable increase in Gardai on the beat during the day around Merchants Quay, Patricks Quay area. Have seen them making a couple of arrests near Bus Station. Still enough to around the whole city and at night probably less again.
I heard the Christmas budget has kicked in so they've put foot patrols on the main streets. They are there to deal with any trouble with junkies & winos etc but not shoplifters. Mainly a visible presence. Too little too late for that poor woman who died.

Great kindness from you Boggy
It’s so sad and you showed that young woman a kindness and that is respect.
Addiction like that is just so horrible but you’re act of kindness to just say a few words and care is fairly invaluable .

Where do homeless people access food if there are no soup kitchens?
Not on the streets. Shouldn’t be an option. Magnet for drug dealers and violence. Dealing with chronic addicts in this way has failed everywhere else. Are they licensed, do they have a permit to operate. Why should they just set up where they like? It’s a public footpath not a restaurant or shop. There’s zoning laws and regulations for a reason.

Rebs I understand your point but some people are so low and dejected in life is it not okay to at least give them a cup of soup or something. It’s a terrible issue for anyone to get that much addicted and we have yet to see the fentanyl effect in Ireland. The government has not funded issues like this and also mental health for a long time and this will be a major issue unless funding is addressed for it. People great people trying to help by giving soup or whatever they can do should be admired. The addiction crisis is way underfunded and it’s just only the tip of the iceberg imo.
