Christmas Day in UCC

I imagine it's one of the biggest days of the year for most pubs in terms of making sales from 1030am until late

Then again in my student days it was vodka razza or a pint of fosters that was the go to, which I can't imagine makes them too much money

And going by the rubbish that's already all over Washington Street, most of the drinking is done outside of the pub!
Pints of Fosters 3 quid in Cissies when I was an undergrad.

There was no such thing as Christmas Day in my time, Rag Week was the big thing. But since that was scaled down this has grown up in its place.

There are weeks and days for everything in college now. UCC Rag week, MTU Rag week, Freshers week, Refreshers week etc. etc.
There always was those weeks and days.

While refreshers is a new trend.

College Christmas day was historically celebrated same day as Thanksgiving, those students living in accommodation would have a Christmas/Thanksgiving Dinner and few drinks before exams take place and they head home to their families.
I'm not sure the reason behind it being today and this late, maybe they're using it as a trial this late in hope that numbers are lower due to assessments and deadlines and that with lower number less anti social behavior

Great day/evening for local economy, people will give out saying students always say they have no money etc but many have been saving for today.

Also numbers in UCC are like 20,000 and MTU 10,000 so the bones of a thousand or so students going out is not that bad and doesn't reflect on the students who genuinely are struggling.

When I went to CIT in the early 00's it was the college/students union that pushed it putting on a Christmas dinner in the canteen and entertainment around the Campus in the morning, In the afternoon everyone headed out for pints in the greater bishopstown area and then later on into town. Always remember it being good fun and rarely any problems. however times have changed i suppose

Correct CITMAS Day as it was called.
Lots of colleges followed suit around the country then.

And f*cking shock UCC couldn't leave us CIT heads have our one and only day in peace without copying us and ruining it for us all.
