Bernard Allen to retire

Not an FG supporter but if there was ever an FG politician I would have voted for it would have been him. He is a gentleman, an honest and hardworking politician for his constituency and I would have thought a shoe-in if he had stood for election.

I agree with all this. Never met him personally but always seemed v proactive on Northside

I emailed him once about the payrise for the lord mayor that was supported by the three major parties on the city council. I was quite irate in the email and didn't expect a response. He sent me a very genuine email in return and without going into too much detail, assured me that it would be addressed and agreed that it was a disgrace. I know that it probably had little or no effect but i was grateful that he at least responded and seemed to take note. i've never heard anything but positive about him, so credit where credit is due.

Allen always came across to me as the epitome of a fat cat

I suppose that you think FG are the party of big business and that tent up at galway races was only an auld pissup for a few plasterers.

If so, your brain has been ruined by FF propoganda and you need help. May i suggest reading 500 back-issues of the Phoenix where you can find out about;
CharlesHaughy/ben dunne/AIB,
Reynolds/Larry Goodman/NIB,
Bertie/ Every fucker with a decent few bob/ All the banks etc. etc.

You may detect a trend.

Who will replace him on the FG ticket?

My prediction in the next election would be Kathleen Lynch, Mick Barry, Billy Kelleher and Dara Murphy.

Gilroy is too Glanmire focused, and Barry will get lots of transfers from Sinn Fein and Labour as well as his own votes. Many people who misguidedly voted for O'Flynn will transfer to Barry, and the Glanmire vote will go to Kelleher.

Lynch is safe, but Gilroy will not be able to capitalise on anti-Government sentiment. Murphy because of his relatively high profile will mop up the FG vote, to the detriment of Blarney based Pat Burton.

1 FG
1 FF
1 Labour
1 Independent

I would think your overstating Barry's chances there considering Johnathan O'Brien got twice his vote in 2007 and should get even more on the first count seeing as Dave Mac probably won't be running.

Tempers flaring lately in FG...Bernard was being pushed aside to allow Dara Murphy come into the frame....Dara made a comment not so long ago about Mr Allen being to old to run.....CNC will miss his contribution up there as he did so much for the whole northside especially the local football clubs who he looked after very well,,,, as for dara murphy trying to take on his roll... FG will regret it as he is a joke and people only heard of him when he became LORD MAYOR.....he should stick to his catering supplies adventure
