There's a very simple solution to rent and rent arrears with councils.

Take it at source. I know people who do it voluntarily to save themselves the hassle

The biggest landlords in the State are the Local Authorities.

They move at a glacial space on dereliction and vacant homes in their areas.

Why?

It is only taxpayers money and we have jobs guaranteed for life with free car parking and perks.

Collect vacant site levies and enforce dereliction orders?

Good luck with that one.

The public servants in our Local Authorities walk pass struggling families who cannot even get a roof over their heads in the well designed lobbies of their fine offices on their way to the canteen

The amount of derelict buildings where i live is a scandal, owner has no desire to do anything with them
Aye, it was a really good episode. There's loads of buildings that have more or less been abandoned in cities and small towns all over the country.

One guy who came back to Ireland a few years ago took it upon himself to investigate. Says he found out that councils are not even aware of the scale of the problem.

If the owners don't want them, then the government has to step in and do something about it. They could almost certainly be a part of solving this.

Some people have pointed out that those who are demanding the ban be extended and shout loudest re housing are the
same people who demand unlimited access to migrants,
As opposed to the government wanting unlimited access for migrants and ending an eviction ban?

Some people have pointed out that those who want the eviction ban to end have no answer when asked where should those with nowhere to go should actually go?

Many owners of derelict sites and rental properties owe banks more than the properties are worth.

Many tenants owe their landlords large sums of money. Banks find it difficult to enforce repossession orders on occupied properties.

I think we’re going to have to have a referendum on property rights, and “the common good,” with a proper referendum commission to explain all this to us in order to get this whole mess sorted out once and for all.

It may have been last year Stacky, apologies if I picked it up wrong...
No, fine and it would not be a huge nice surprise if they had used up all their annual budget on making homes habitable.

Throw as much money as possible at this problem as the big winners currently are the landlords getting all the HAP €€€ etc while the long-term solution takes forever.
