Reason at the time of getting the name is lost in history now but perhaps there was a rope by way of a "hand rail" or with the one near the bottom of Wyse's Hill perhaps it had something to do with the work going on in the distillery underneath. The one in Blackrock is unusual in that it forms a kind of split-level in the road so maybe at one stage there was a rope warning people to mind their step.
Down at the bottom of the hill is a corner stone from the original medieval monastery built into the old distillery wall.

I've only been there once last year but remember that meandering walk down, then I discovered the straight walk back....
