SF housing policies wouldn't suit landlord speculators like Robert Troy but if the likes of him were out of the equation it would free up a lot of properties for potential homeowners who are currently priced out of the market.

We need to move away from this over reliance on landlords to provide accommodation for people longterm.
The only way to do that is by building on a massive scale, Both private and social, But is the land there, infrastructure, workers?

So where do those who need to rent live?

The bottom of the ocean?

We do not even have the builders as it is and the public service puts up roadblocks at every turn from the planning system to utilities as well as all politicians objecting.

Troy and his fellow speculators need to be seen as part of the problem, not the solution.

Also, dereliction needs to be tackled.

Tighter regulations will drive out the cowboys and leave decent professional landlords to provide their share of the accommodation mix.

Except they won't.

All they are doing is driving people out of the letting market in record numbers.

The IPOA told them this is what would happen two years ago and they ignored them. Predictably enough this is what happened.

Further restrictions placed on the rental sector will only see supply further constrict.

It’s going result in a lot of tenants getting booted out in the run up to the next general election as the vast majority of small landlords would leave straight away under these rules and further accelerate what is a major crisis?

Renters who vote S.F. will be potentially voting themselves towards homelessness.
I love the way you scrubbed Michael McDowells name off your doctored attachment. Are you fearful of highlighting that that is his opinion piece?
As if we already don’t know Michael’s deep seated fears about his vested interests being affected by a SF government. He failed as a politician yet wants us all to believe the SF bogeyman with his agenda driven op ed.
Take a walk Michael, you blew your chance and the electorate turfed you out, turn back into the embracing arms of your buddies in the law society.

'Failed as a politician'?

How do you make that out about Senator McDowell?

One of the very few people involved in Irish politics who took a substantial paycut to take public office.

He's completely on the ball in this instance

Eh you just made my point for me…he was appointed to the Seanad by cronies in his alma matar. Not by the public. The trough is very enticing!
Oh sure, but take aim at me for stacky uploading a doctored photo to hide his shame at his source material.
