The Blackwater Valley Makers Art and Craft Gallery at 12 McCurtain Street, Fermoy are delighted
to announce a new visiting exhibition for the months of July and August. The show is titled
“Where Wings Meet Water” and is a collection of stained glass pieces by the artist Gaby Aubin
who is based in West Cork. The work centres on birds, animals, and marine life, translating careful
observation into glass through colour, line, and light.
Gaby was born in Essex, England and moved to West Cork when she was just six years old. Gaby
says, “I was encouraged from a very early age to spend most of my time outdoors with nature,
including lots of dogs and horses. My parents were both very artistic so my love of art began. I
have worked with glass and horses especially, for the last 35 years.”
Gaby trained in traditional stained glass while living back in England and has since developed her
practice independently, refining her skills in Ti?any style copper-foil techniques. Wirework
elements draw on her background in jewellery making, while hand-painted
details reflect a
balance of structure and delicacy.
The glass type is selected for its ability to reflect the character of each subject. Her work
combines contemporary and traditional glass designs and processes using surface, texture, and
light as essential expressive elements.
Says Gaby,”I am very excited for the exhibition, to show that stained glass is not just about
traditional church windows and generic sun catchers and to show my love of nature through a
unique perspective of a fabulously versatile medium, and hopefully encourage people to take up a
dying craft.”
She values direct engagement with viewers and collectors so she showcases her work throughout
the year at various craft fairs and markets. She can often be found in Kinsale during the spring
and summer months and is open to taking commissions.
The exhibition opening takes place on Saturday, 4th July between 2 and 6pm. There will be a wine
reception, an introduction by BVM member, woodturner and fellow craftsperson, John O’Shea
and admission is free.
Blackwater Valley Makers would like to warmly thank Cork County Council, Synergy Credit Union
and the Avondhu press for their continued support. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm.
