Cop City Centre: "You Cant Even Rob A Bike Now With Them"

Following sustained appeals for more Gardaí to patrol the city centre over the last few years, at least 40 new Gardaí were assigned to Cork in November to make locals feel more secure as they go about their daily business.

However, in a bout of entirely predictable contrariness many other Corkonians feel there are now too many Gardaí.

“Nah, it’s ridiculous now sure they’re everywhere”, according to Connie O’Sullivan from St. Lukes, “there’s no crime in Cork anymore, it’s all happening up in Dublin. They’re embarrassing us flooding the place with cops, you’d think we were Tallaght or one of those places.”

The increase in the numbers of Gardaí on the streets has been very visible. Busy areas with high footfall such as Daunt Square, Nano Nagle bridge and The Fountain on Grand Parade have Gardaí present during the day (most of whom look like they are on the verge of hypothermia) meaning that dealers now have to use side-streets to sell drugs instead.

“What about feens who are trying to make a decent living from selling a bitta gear?”, said Scobby Noonan (28), “and like, you can’t even rob a bike now cos the law are everywhere. How’my suppose get to the other side of town if someone needs a bag in a hurry? They’re after destroying the place.”

Cork Dealers Association have appealed to Gardaí to give them a break over Christmas requesting a reduction in numbers around peak dealing times.

We requested a comment from Anglesea Street Station but there were no Gardaí available as they were all in the city centre wrecking everyone's Christmas by making the place safe.
