The Official Swimming Thread

He’s done it again, pulverised the field really. All to play for in Paris.

Good day for the relay teams too - if you’re qualifying relay teams for 4X100 men’s or women’s relays at the Olympics, you’re a proper swimming team.

That's a really clear rule violation - you stay in your lane until the race is over - until the last swimmer has finished. Not just so that you don't interfere with other swimmers, but also as a basic courtesy to the other athletes. Kids are taught this from day 1. Usually there's an official on the end of the lane to stop you - but that's more for younger swimmers.

If he'd sat up on the rope and not put his foot into the next lane he'd have been OK - but he went way beyond even that.

The commentators were utterly clueless - the second you saw him up on the rope, you knew he was out.

Yeah he's on a scholarship to Loughborough - and, along with the Swim Ireland high performance pathway, it has been the making of him. he has really clicked with the regime there.

Even your basic club swimmers do the two hours each morning in the water - our crowd go from 05:30 to 07:30 - with the top-end club swimmers doing an evening session twice a week and then the various weights/ pilates/yoga sessions too. If you're on the pathway, you're also heading to UL at least once a week to train there and spending your school holidays with the Ireland dev squad in Dublin or Bangor. It's full on

I'll never understand why they can't do time penalties. Same as in athletics, DQ seems overly punitive for excessive celebration.

The life of a scholarship athlete, it's extremely tough going compared to a regular student.

He came across very well IMHO. A nice lad.
