Cork u20 Hurling 2024

You re wrong on that. Its very strange that you think you can play intercounty unless you are in peak physical condition. You cant.
Tipps conditioning was miles ahead of Corks tonight.

Some of the cork lads looked a little out of shape.
Not wrong at all TAN. Playing the game within the 45s with a reliance on handpassing, bereft of teamwork and an inside goal threat, repeatedly hitting wides from play and frees, constantly fumbling the ball when in space and poor first touch also in space has sweet f**k all to do with gym work or S&C. It is down to not adhering to the bread and butter of the game and poor concentration leading to poor confidence and a lack of craft.

7 of tonight's team won AI medals as starters last year and another player Ross O'Sullivan who was sub tonight also started in the AI final in 2023, that is 8 players, Fact! After defeating Offaly the talk was that the team were over physical and now these guys are a year older and stronger they lose to Tipp and it's a case of returning to the gym in May, absolute bull! Another fact is the majority of the Tipp players are a year younger.

Gym work won't select a proper team that comes down to the management. It was you who stated Cork need 1 or 2 more abrasive players, well they are there! Timmy Wilk is a powerhouse for his height and he hasn't got a start yet in 4 games, Barry Walsh is another powerhouse just out of minor and he gets his 1st start tonight. Ben Nyhan is 6'6" and he's not on the panel. Oran O'Regan never played in defence until this year and he's picked at 6 to lead the rearguard. Kevin Lyons played well at full-back in the previous games but he's taken out of there by the management for tonights game. Farcical decision making to say the least and gym work won't change a thing!

the talk was that the team was overly physical and the referee should have taken action on the day. There was no such conversation after the Munster final where the Clare team had the physicality to cope with that.

Thats not the same as the general consensus that Cork were an overly Physical team.
In relation to the 7 lads left from last year Kingston, O Connor, Downey, Mullins and Cunningham being gone is significant.

You cant pick and choose what you do. The gymwork and nutrition has to be gotten right as part of the entire process.
Even for senior, the players have to emerge with the habits ingrained to play senior

Wilk isnt a fair criticism , he has been injured

Teams can read us now like a book. Cork can’t go long so they have no choice but to go short - that makes it so easy to attack by setting the simplest of traps. On what planet does it make sense to hit a puck out to a guy 30 yards out on the sideline and then expect him to protect the ball, deal with 2 oncoming tacklers, and pick out a good delivery/next ball. If that’s BOC hurling, I’m not interested.

Ben O Connor has a stick to beat those lads with now ...i would not write them off yet ...Ben and the management have been in charge now for there second season tonight was there 10th match and first defeat ....i just feel as bad as tonight and it was poor we are not out yet.

Myself and finbarrog could nearly have coached last years group to an all ireland they were that good

Spot on, but it’s probably even more important that our good youngsters get exposed to a different style of play that matches the seniors . In 2 or 3 years time they will be our seniors

Me too if the management swallow their pride and let the players cut loose
He had the best team last year alright but he did pretty well to win a county championship with Midleton as well to be fair. Seems to be a good motivator and a lot of the players seem to like him.

Have no issue with them using the short game, but they need to be able to mix it up a bit more. Limerick will use the short game as well at times but it’s all about manipulating space for them. They don’t sacrifice physicality and ball winning ability for the sake of the running game and extra speed. As KYS mentioned, Cork did play a more direct style last year.

Speaking of Limerick, we’re not exactly blessed with a load of 6-foot-6 guys on our senior team like them, so I’d share your disappointment with regards to the treatment of Nyhan. The fact he left the panel without getting any proper opportunities is almost more worrying than the results or performances. Rob Downey is the only current senior player of a similar height to the likes of Hayes, O’Donoghue and Hegarty.

When you consider how many opportunities other guys (not in great form or with any stand out physical attributes) have gotten in comparison, it is really strange. Nobody else in the middle-8 positions is over 6-foot-3, so it’s always going to be tricky for them to compete in the air against taller teams, and that’s not going to get any easier at senior level, where the average height is even taller. They can do all the S&C work in the world but it’s not going to help them become as tall as Hayes etc.
