Alan Quirke

Don't see at thread on this already. A superb servant to Cork football. Brought Cork into a new era where kick-outs became an art form. Apart from 2007 can't remember a goal where you could say he was at fault and even then, for one of those he was attempting to help Canty, who then lost the ball, leaving the goal wide open.
Organised his backs superbly. Heard him at club games and constantly giving the backs their orders.
Enjoy the retirement Quirkie.

We still have people in Cork that still give Alan Quirke shit about the 2007 all ireland final and that kickout against Limerick in that qualifier match in 2010 but overall he was a very reliable steady and consistent player for Cork.I felt that at his peak his shot stopping was as good as any other keeper in the country and his kickouts and distribution were only second to Stephen Cluxton. He was also around the panel from 1999-2001.Thank you Alan Quirke for your often unheralded (at a national level) efforts for Cork and it was madness that this man didn't get an all star in 2010.

He also should have won an all star in 2012.Only 1 goal conceded in league and championship football that year and that goal was from a penalty that wasn't a penalty.

Agree completely, never given the credit he truly deserves. Has won loads with UCC Valley Rovers and Cork. A good sign of a goalkeeper is that you don't notice them most of the time. Means they have organised their defence and stopped things happening before they happen. At this Quirke was the best and for a tall man could get down well when needed. Seemingly was a good underage hurler too and has medals in that code too from his underage days.

x2

Made some superb saves v Dublin this year also. 2nd best keeper in the country for the past 6 or 7 years. Kickouts were excellent but that area of his game has not been as good in the past two years. Supposedly a great leader around the squad also.

Alan along with the 5 others gone (Sheehan, Pearse, Noelie, Canty & Paudie) were top players when at their peak - It will represent a serious challenge for their replacements to get to the same level.

From Rebel Gaa.

lilywhite86: very good keeper in fairness to him.
i remember him playing a few league games back in maybe 99. what happened to him for a few years then? he didn't get back in until about 06, i think he would have been a better option than o'dwyer in the years in between.
anyway, good luck in your retirement. hope ken o'halloran gets in now, he has done his apprenticeship in fairness!

PODSY: Jesus....it continues...

Alan Quirke was excellent for Cork. A superb tactician, even if the kick-out plan wasn't always of his making or always universally popular among Cork
support. Regardless, he executed it superbly. For a while he and Cluxton were the best in Ireland by a distance. Fair to say that Cluxton moved on to a higher level again of late, but then again it seemed obvious that Dublin's management allowed their keeper more time on kickout strategies than Cork did theirs (what was awesome about Dublin's kickouts this year was the sheer amount of pre-planned dummy runs that preceeded each one, a product of hours of teamwork on the training field one had to presume).

O' Halloran is a worthy successor but we will miss Alan and he ranks up their beside the best of Cork custodians, and that's high praise.

RebelsAbú: A truly excellent keeper and recovered brilliantly from a poor 2007 AI final to be second only to Cluxton in terms of the goalkeeping hierarchy in the years thereafter. A huge presence around the square and hopefully Ken can fill his boots over the coming year.

Enjoy the retirement Alan

CORKFAN: Another Cork player who retires with a huge amount won...1 Senior All-Ireland , 4 National Leauge medals, 1 Div.2 National Leauge medal...6 Munster senior Championship medals ..1 Junior All-ireland Medal...1 county Intermidate medal...player International Rules ....but how he neaver won an All-Star i will neaver know ...thanks Alan an outstanding goalkeeper...
