Chernobyl Convoy Send Off

Chernobyl Convoy Send Off

Chernobyl Children's Project International sent off their largest ever convoy of humanitarian aid on Sunday, twenty years after the world's worst environmental disaster. The convoy left from Midleton heading for Belarussia and other countries affected by the explosion in Chernobyl.

The People's Republic of Cork donated 100 t-shirts for our comrades in Belarussia and designed a special edition t-shirt to raise funds  and awareness for the convoy.

Many of the convoy's 90 volunteer drivers were from outside the People's Republic and tension broke out as the Dubs and Kerrymen refused to wear their Народная Республика Корк t-shirt, having been misinformed that it translated as "My mother was a Corkwoman".

Order was only restored after MC Duncan Stuart threatened to deliver a 2 hour lecture on using cow shite as an alternative fuel source...

Adi Roche spoke passionately about the ongoing need for help and awareness about the areas affected by the radiation and this year's convoy is being dedicated to the memory of Veronik Charlai, who was born 8 years after the explosion, but died from the effects of radiation last year.

The convoy left under Garda escort and was accompanied to the Waterford border by the Munster Goldwing Motorbike Club. It is felt that if they make it through Waterford on their own, Moldovia and Belarussia should present no problems.
