Chiaroscouro - he was the master of itYes, there is a strong contrast setting the scene to highlight the figures against a very dark background. That was his particular style yet some of his portraits are more close up, pale child again a dark back. There is a sense of theatre here like a stage where the people are impossible to ignore such is the difference in light and dark. Theatrical is definitely a theme with vast shadow. It's quite beautiful in a stark way but also very real and human and also expertly rendered in terms of figurative realism of form
