2023 Premier SHC

Those in charge of the fixtures have no cop on fixing the Barr and glen games at the same time.As a barrs man i will be in PUC but i like plenty other barrs and charleville supporters would love to see the glen game as well.
Crazy decision, the Glen and Kanturk is a huge draw for neutrals because of the peril the Glen are facing, both games should have been in PUC as a double header

The thing is the Glen, after nearly as long a famine as the Barrs went and won back to back counties having put things together underage. They were at the top for a decade and probably didn't win the amount of counties to reflect their dominance over that decade but teams grow old, hunger dips, priorities change. Clearly on Sunday's performance the Glen are no longer the force they were, and much and all as it pains me to say so, we are looking very likely to follow Na Piarsaigh through the trap-door, something unthinkable just a few years ago.

The rockies as well as the barrs came within an ace of going down but top flight is promised to nobody. But they did enough on their last match to avoid it.
You have to win a minimum of games and it's looking like the Glen may lose each championship game they play. It's painful and a bit embarassing for a club of such fame but the results don't lie. We had the worst results in our section over the piece.

Up against Kanturk in Fermoy things look very ominous but in adversity strong characters come to the fore. I've no doubt that if The Glen go down it will be with fight (for the ball) and showing some of the Spirit of The Glen. BUT it may not be enough - we're flirting with relegation and now it could very well happen.

If it does, then hopefully we will come straight back up - much easier said than done though. IF Glen do go down they can feel sorry for themselves and withdraw and just become a drinking club a la famed Redmonds of old, or players and officials and everyone in the club can band together and battle to get back up.

Either way, I sure hope there'll be a very big Glen crowd at the game.
Win lose or draw on Sunday one thing is certain, the Glen will not just fade away like Redmonds of old, too many proud and knowledgeable hurling men up in Blackpool to allow that happen.

This could be the wake up call they need to refresh their senior team and start bringing through more of their younger lads. We in the Barrs have had a golden period at underage recently but one of the few clubs to put it up to us were the Glen so don’t anyone tell me the talent isn’t there

Clearly you've never played the game.
What makes you think that? Because my opinion differs to yours?

I played for over 25 years. Played Senior, won feck all and was bang average but I played. I actually believe I have the distinction of being the only person in Cork to play Senior, Intermediate, Junior A, B and C championship for my club. At least that’s what a few old lads in the club bar tell me 😀

I didn’t play in the days of a fag before the match or whip on everything that comes my way. But I played, any my opinion is as valid as yours.

Since you don't believe a word of my post then you should read Soundman's post on the same subject and you might learn something.

You must be much more of an 'ould fogie' than me when you can state that every aspect of the game has improved over 70 years as I've only been attending matches just over 45 years. However in doing so you dismiss ground hurling as a skill. Personally I have no interest in a player pulling on a ball on the ground unless it's done correctly like John Fenton and John Fitzgibbon among others did it back in the day. However moving the ball even a short distance on the ground using the stick would be welcome to take us away from rucks associated with a different sport. You maintain todays players have better technique but you totally dismiss a skill shown by the likes of Fenton and Fitzgibbon so it's probably not even worthwhile asking you who are the players with better technique.

Last Saturday night I watched Blarney v Ballyhea in Mourneabbey. The best piece of skill received the biggest cheer on the night other than the Blarney supporters after they hit 1-2 in a few minutes with Mark Coleman's introduction to determine the outcome and of course the final whistle from them got another rousing cheer. The skill involved a player trapping the ball in the air and then bringing it down with the hurley and putting it over the bar from 40 plus metres all in one movement. This player is one of the most unfit players in the county and refuses to play with Cork. He has little running speed and cannot tackle but there again either can Kyle Hayes tackle at least compared to the likes of Sean Og and JJ Delaney. In the same game any ball to a wing forward was mostly hit back 20 metres by the wing-forward to a teammate and there was never a 40 yard inside ball to the full or corner-forwards who then only come too far out from goal anyway. Where is the skill or technique you are on about in striking or hand passing 20 metres back the field when the player receiving the pass doesn't score because he's too far out or his striking is not top notch? This is the coaching derived from soccer and rugby, this is not for hurling.

I returned to the same venue the following day when I saw a lot of the same at the higher level, although one Charleville player in the first half had little trouble skinning his marker and scoring 3 points. Since you refer to better technique today you obviously have no problem with the constant hand passing not to mind the fouling of the ball when doing so, even Pat Ryan acknowledges this as an eyesore that the GAA have to deal with by only allowing the handpass off the hurley.

You also seem to have no problem with the rucks from sheep in a heap which again is not pleasing to the eye.

The game has lost too much of its identity but sure some folk will follow anything and remain happy with practically everything. God help the Rest of us!

Don't believe a word of that.
If you don't understand that having a bas 2/3 times the size of previous makes it immeasurably easier for players to execute the skills of the game such as striking, controlling the sliotar, soloing etc etc then either you never played or you are extremely stupid. Probably both.
