The Hurling Thread

As others here have said only time will tell what that game today meant if anything.

Personally thought it was bad fare, entertaining to a point but littered with fumble after fumble, wides and yet more fussy officiating from James Owens. He's an awful referee in my opinion.

Don't think Eoin Cody deserved his second yellow. It was a harmless stroke. Casey definitely deserved his red. A nasty strike although he was digged first.

Limerick looked disinterested from a long way out. Their touch was bad and they looked leggy and tired. As alluded to here they looked like a team in the middle of a heavy block of training. Added to that John Kiely and Paul Kinnerk looked serene on the sideline as Kilkenny clipped them and I think that tells you all you need to know about Limericks attitude to today.

However there was a few things glaringly obvious about them regardless of their attitude. Sean Finn and Declan Hannon have a long way to go to get back to their best. Both were particularly bad today, Hannon especially was all over the place. I expect Clare and Tipp to target the pair of them in the opening rounds. Limericks young lads with the exception of Cathal O Neill are not as good as their made out to be. The media fawning over the Limerick panel in recent weeks. I don't see it. I think they have 17 or 18 outstanding players but after that I think there is a steep decline in the talent. Costello, English, O Dalaigh, Boylan are all decent players but they don't improve Limerick, they weaken them.

Nickie Quaid had a very shaky afternoon I thought. Poorest I've seen him in years.

A Limerick performance like that on their next visit to the pairc would be most welcome.

Kilkenny worked like dogs. Dour and gritty. Harried Limerick relentlessly. Galway are seriously missing a trick not taking the league seriously. Them and Kilkenny are as good as guaranteed a passage to the All Ireland series every year so should really be going all out to win the league every year as Kilkenny do.
Hard to judge Kilkenny as well today. Their next proper meaningful game will be the Leinster final and that will tell us a lot more about them. I liked the look of Jordan Molloy in midfield. Could be another unpolished gem for them.
Excellent post vlad. But I would say ref Finn snd Hannon. They have Casey and Dan m to slot in there. Should Hannon not be right. Put o Neil in there with Hayes and Byrnes. Or just go with last year drop wod back.

Two visits to PuC by Limerick and 3 goals conceded each time. No harm that that's in the back of their heads for their third visit in a few weeks time
I would doubt it. Limerick had a few bad league campaigns with wides and red cards in 2021 2022. Rest is history. And besides I doubt ull see Costello in a green jersey again this year

Ya that's the strength Limerick have. Hannon and Finn poor but still have players the quality of Dan Morrisey and Mike Casey to slot in.

I thought Diarmuid Byrnes was uncharacteristically poor on his long range shooting and frees today. In a lot of games where Limerick drift out of it they can usually rely on him to keep them in touch with 3 or 4 monster scores.

Kiely had to book it so during the Easter holidays this time. Think it didn't go down well previously in the school when they headed away for a camp the week schools were coming back after being off the week before.
Off to Portugal, kk some bet today at 7/2, Limerick had zero interest after going 1-2 to 0 up

To be fair they started lively. Two bad goals to concede. Cody’s red lifted them but when kk went 6 ahead on 50 mins they downed tools and hauled best players off. And with 5 mins left just happy to take Hail Mary point shots instead of going for goals

Great points made. Agree with all except ref. I though he was very good but agree to disagree with you. Limerick did look leggy from hard training but there touch was way off.

2 takeaways for me
KK pressed them high up the field and stopped Limerick building from the back.

KK reduced the influence of Lynch.

Limerick were awful. They didn’t look too bothered about it too.

Expect them to be a different beast in 4 weeks time. They also have 5/6 players to come back in
5/6 ?
That sounds a lot unless you intend replacing stalwarts like Finn and Hannon.

All will be revealed in a few short weeks.

5/6 ?
Did they replace them with junior b players? Surely players like Cathal O Neill, O Dalaigh are as good as any they have.

Is it possible to switch on or off performances at will ?

I don't think any of the Munster counties will change their preparation one iota as a result of this game.

I expect the game tomorrow to be fiercely contested.
Of course. Lohan been hearing for 5 years u won fuck all. He will see league as a real chance now.
