How it works in every other country is: Only the car at the top of the queue takes the next person in line. When that taxi moves off, the next taxi moves up and takes its place. Why do some people have a hard time understanding how queues work?

Why is it up to the crowd to confront the "tosser with the snack box"? Sounds like a good way to get a punch in the mouth from Mr Tosser.

This queuing lark is a bit of a farce. I remember a few years ago in that shithole doortee Double Inn waiting in line outside their railway station and all the taxis were arriving and picking people up. I was with two colleagues and we each had laptop bags. This clapped out piece of Asian shit ( I think it was a Toyota Corolla) arrived with a glass divider between front and back and replacement vinyl seat covers. We had to get in it.
It was filthy. We should be allowed choose our taxis to encourage drivers to provide nice clean cars.

AFAIK, in Cork City anyway, there is no onus on any customer to choose the first taxi in the rank, and neither is there an onus on any taxi driver to take the next person in the queue. But good manners would generally dictate that you would.

I was in town recently and spoke to the driver of the first taxi in the queue. I asked if he knew where the particular destination I required was and he said "Yeah, it's in Glanmire" (it wasn't) so I politely declined and asked similar of the driver of the second Taxi. He knew exactly where it was and how to get there so I went with him. Last thing I want to be doing after a long night out is guiding a guy who should know the route where to go

It's not exactly rocket science.
