Brexit LIVE: Global Britain kickstarts £11bn spending spree as imports surge
BRITAIN has gone on an £11billion Brexit spending spree in Ireland as UK imports surge.
Goodsimported from Ireland to the UK in the first 11 months since Britain left the EU jumped by more than 20 percent, nudging £11.2billion, according to new figures. The main changes were increases in chemical, machinery and transport equipment exports, and a decrease in food and live animal exports. Exports from Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland also jumped, by more than 64 percent, while exports to north of the border also rose by more than 50 percent. The new figures come amid ongoing negotiations between Liz Truss and her EU counterpart Maros Sefcovic over the future of the Northern Ireland Protocol, with the aim to avoid a hard border.
