Community Centre Stuake Co Cork postal code P32XW80 at 2pm. Walk the short distance to the National Monument. The unveiling will be performed by Bernadette Wallace, Sheila and Nora’s niece. It will be followed by a talk given back in the Community Centre by Anne Twomey titled Extraordinary Women in Extraordinary Times.

The Wallace sisters were natives of Kilcullen South, Donoughmore. The family were evicted from their farm in the 1890’s, a traumatic event which would shape the lives of Sheila and Nora. Forced to move to the nearby townland of Barrachauring the family started to plan for the future. They moved into Cork city and began shopkeeping in Brunswick Street, now known as St Augustine’s Street. How the shop and their home developed into the headquarters of the IRA Cork No 1 Brigade is a remarkable story of quiet determination and selfless sacrifice
