Using discarded bicycle tyres as the basis for her work, Martirosyan explores the transformative potential of repeated actions and the evocative power of materials in a state of rejection. Her engagement with the reclaimed rubber is purposely physical and tactile in its nature as she cuts, weaves and knots the tyres into large scale forms.
Gradually invading the gallery space, the final installation is suggestive of organic growth and mutation. The work’s emotional weight is carried by its visual density, offering an intense visceral experience to the viewer.
