This festival celebrates the life and work of Cork born Mary Harris who was born in Shandon, Cork City in 1837, emigrated to Canada and became a school teacher.
She lost her family in a yellow fever epidemic in 1867 in Memphis but joined the American trade union movement where she worked for almost five decades to defend the working people especially the miners.
She campaigned to end child labour also and fought for social justice. She died in 1930. A plaque commemorates Mother Jones in Cork city.
This festival and summer school reflects the work of Mother Jones and deals with labour and trade union topics, human rights and social justice issues. There will be some 20 events over the three day festival, all are free on a first come first seated basis. Many of Cork's best musicians will also perform.
