Midleton Farmers Market Marks 25 Years – and Celebrates with a Festive Finale
This year has been a milestone for one of East Cork’s most beloved institutions, as Midleton Farmers Market proudly celebrates its 25th anniversary.
What began in 2000 as a modest gathering of a handful of farmers and food producers has flourished into one of Ireland’s premier markets. Founded by Darina Allen of Ballymaloe Cookery School, Ted Murphy, then a local town councillor, and a number of passionate producers, the market was among the very first of its kind in Ireland. It helped to ignite the country’s modern-day farmers’ market movement and, in doing so, shaped the food culture of Midleton and beyond.
The vision of its founders was simple yet powerful – to connect local people with local food. A quarter of a century later, that vision remains at the heart of the market, which has become a thriving hub of community, sustainability, and quality produce.
Every Saturday, rain or shine, the Fair Green in Midleton is transformed into a bustling
marketplace. Stalls brim with fresh vegetables, free-range meats, artisan cheeses, preserves, home-baked treats, and fresh flowers. Many stallholders have been part of the market since its early days, greeting loyal customers by name and helping to foster a strong sense of community.
Twenty-five years on, we’re proud that Midleton Farmers Market is still true to its roots. It has always been about good food, fair prices, and building lasting relationships between local producers and the people of East Cork.
A Festive Season to Remember
As 2025 draws to a close, the market takes on a festive atmosphere for the remainder of December, offering the perfect opportunity for shoppers to stock up on Christmas essentials while enjoying the spirit of the season. From artisan food to seasonal produce and freshly baked Christmas cakes, there will be something for everyone.
The year’s celebrations will culminate in a special Christmas Market on Saturday ,20th December 2025 – the final trading day of the year. Visitors can expect festive cheer, seasonal surprises, and a warm Midleton welcome as the market rounds off its 25th year in style.
As demand for sustainable, local produce continues to grow, Midleton Farmers Market stands as a shining example of what community-supported food systems can achieve.
