Cork-based artist, Edel Ryder-Hanrahan announces their first solo portrait exhibition: “Me, Myself & BTS”, in the Hideout Cafe & Art Gallery on Wellington Rd. from January 9th 2025.
Fans of art and Korean pop-music alike will enjoy an extensive exhibition comprising of 30 pairs of portraits completed in ink, watercolour and graphite. Each pair consists of a self-portrait of the artist and a portrait of a member of worldwide K-pop sensation BTS, linked together through song lyrics from the group’s music.
During the dark days of covid lockdown, Edel rediscovered their love of drawing and painting, and at the same time discovered renewed energy and hope from the music and message of BTS, whose “Love Yourself” and “Map of the Soul” series were of particular inspiration.
“Me, Myself & BTS” takes you on a journey through the artist’s exploration of self-acceptance and renewal while aging. As a 47-year-old parent of three children, Edel started to wonder where they could find space for their own
identity, and found painting to be something that let them feel like they could see themselves. The exhibition details Edel’s attempt to answer whether or not they could find a way to love themselves as much as they love those around them.
This unusual and emotive exhibition will be showcased for eight weeks in the beautiful Hideout Cafe and Art Gallery, a true hidden gem of Cork’s Victorian Quarter with a spacious interior and beautiful views of the city.
“Me, Myself & BTS” promises an extraordinary view into one of Cork’s newest artistic talents. Make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to see it in early 2025.
