May Sunday Festival

Castlemartyr

Sat 29 Apr 2023 - Sun 14 May 2023 (note: this event has already taken place)

This year, the festival will include interactive workshops, music, dancing, walks, an art and craft market, plus much more! The full programme of events will be available at www.maysunday.ie soon, and our printed brochure will be distributed locally.

The first Sunday in May has been Killeagh’s festival day since the 1830s. The celebrations began on the De Capel Brooke Estate, which is now Glenbower Wood. The family wanted to show off their improvements to their home, so invited the villagers onto the estate for music and dancing.

In the 1920s, the festival became very popular, spilling out of the Wood and onto the main street. It was a colourful event which featured music, dancing, and food and continued annually until the 1990s. In 2018 Greywood Arts initiated a revival of the festivities that celebrated local creativity, history and ecology through a programme devised in collaboration with artists and community groups, and supported by Cork County Council.
