Born in Donaghmede in the mid-70s, Dempsey moved from the boxing ring to the stage, forging a voice that speaks to hope, hardship and the heart of community. Since releasing his debut They Don’t Teach This Shit In School in 2000, he has built a remarkable catalogue — from Seize The Day, Shots and To Hell or Barbados to the celebrated Soulsun, Union and his 2024 album Hold Your Joy. His annual Vicar Street performances have become a cherished ritual, captured beautifully in the documentary Love Yourself Today. In recent years, his one-man Abbey Theatre show, Tales From The Holywell, revealed the humour, honesty and humanity that have long defined his work.
