When the original version of the film was released in 1980, it caused much controversy since producer Bob Guccione severely compromised the intentions of writer Gore Vidal and director Tinto Brass by drastically re-editing the film and adding footage which was not part of principal photography. This extensive reconstruction, overseen by Thomas Negovan, is an entirely different edition of the film, using all new takes and angles scanned from the original camera negatives.
