Cork Hurling Fan Breaks Fingers-In-Ears World Record
5th Aug 2025
Noel Fintan Murphy has decided that it may be time to remove his fingers from
his ears after embarking taking on the world record attempt 56 minutes into the
2025 All Ireland hurling final, soon after Cork full back Eoin Downey was sent
off after conceding a penalty.
Raising funds for a local charity, the Charleville native plugged his ears closed
with his fingers after an unexplained Cork collapse despite being six points up
at half time.
“I had no plans to do it but I had to block out everything on the day and for
at least two weeks after the final,” he said, “no Sunday Game, no Michael
Duignan and Jackie Tyrell trying to stop themselves laughing, no podcasts, no
PROC forum, social media or newspapers. Nothing!!”
After 408 hours of continuous aural deprivation, Murphy released his fingers and
thereby smashing the World Record set by his brother Darren in 2021 after the
defeat to Limerick in that final.
“I thought nothing could console me but the camogie three-in-a-row is on Sunday,
that might take the edge off me if they win that”
If they don’t win, Murphy could end up breaking his own record again.
