Cork Hurlers - Part 2

2 things: 1. Using a Rugby guys article or anything Rugby related on a hurlers forum is not the way to go 2. To indicate that the Cork hurlers don't work hard is ridiculous, the time and effort that goes in to just keep your head above water at intercounty level is insane these days

That quote did not come from the brain of O Gara ffs, its nothing new or groundbreaking, that's been used across all sports and disciplines for donkey's years
It's a great line and not used as much as other lines such as the ones that encourage work over talent. One line used more often is 'Fail to Prepare, Prepare to Fail'. When coaches use this it's mainly more relevant to work ethic rather than skill and the quote actually implies to all facets of preparation. The practice of the skills should be paramount but not today unfortunately.

Ah it’s along the same theme as Paul O’ Cornell’s favourite saying: “Let’s be the worlds best at the things that don’t require talent” (ie) getting your ass off the ground first. Working back first. Making that extra run/option etc etc.
Just another way of highlighting the importance of hard work ethic.
Didn’t JBM bring Keano in for a similar talk with the panel during JBMs second stint.

“Work beats talent when talent doesn’t work”
Great line from Ronan O’Gara in his Examiner column. He’s talking about rugby but he could very well be talking about Cork hurling
Oh Jesus , maybe we have gone Full circle when fellas are quoting Corporate Gobbledygook for ROG to use on the After Dinner Circuit.

Thinking about the Waterford match, it's likely that Waterford will deploy a sweeper in front of Connolly. That'll effectively take him out of the game for long periods. He'll need to be patient and we wouldn't want to be expecting too much of him. If it's getting too congested in there it's possible that he could be subbed out for a pacier option.

Waterford will probably want to turn it into a shootout and they'll be happy if they can keep us shooting from distance. If we're going to really hurt them, we may also need to build from the back with the dreaded 'tippy tappy' stuff. Guys like Millerick and Downey can make a big difference running from deeper positions. Coleman would be ideal somewhere around the middle. His vision is excellent and he can hit pacy guys running into space.

Connolly will be a marked man alright, but I still expect goals from him, he’s not the type to get frustrated, he knows the chances will come

You make a good point on the tippy tappy, waterford are so defensive there will be little room inside and we will be shooting from distance. I wonder would we be better with both Downeys wing back that day as Eoin is a much better striker of the ball than Millerick

Waterford worry me because they are so unorthodox, god knows what tactics Davy will employ, I’d say even Davy doesn’t know, but in their eyes we are the ideal opening game because that air of inconsistency and to a lesser extent these days, flakiness still hangs over us.

It’s a huge game for both teams
