Batsh*t Crazy Green Party

"China has an answer to the heat waves now affecting much of the Northern Hemisphere: burn more coal to maintain a stable electricity supply for air-conditioning.
Even before this year, China was emitting almost a third of all energy-related greenhouse gases — more than the United States, Europe and Japan combined. China burns more coal every year than the rest of the world combined. Last month, China generated 14 percent more electricity from coal, its dominant fuel source, than it did in June 2022."

Status, as cars get bigger every other car has to get bigger and then take up more road and parking space like in an arms race.

People driving on the school run in the city and to the shops in BMW X5's is just stupid.

Aren't Smart Cars more of a modern phenomenon. And fiat brought out those 500s recently. You see plenty of Minis and Micras around.

But you're right about the school run with only one passenger, or a short trip to the shops, in a huge SUV - bonkers

Not really. People drive larger (wider, longer) cars because safety regulations have made them larger. People drive higher cars because it's much easier to get small kids in and out and work with child seats etc - let's face it, the vast majority of "SUVs" are family vehicles - there's as reason for that! Note most cars in Europe which are called "SUVs" (especially by eco nutters, but sometimes even by their manufacturer) are actually crossovers and take up a lot less road space than people think - e.g. the biggest selling car in Ireland is the Hyundai Sante Fe and while jealous Greens are foaming at the mouth about it being an 'enormous SUV', it actually takes up the same space as a Ford Focus.
