The Real Queen Togs Out

While the Queen of England visited Cork, the PROC’s own queen Sonia O’Sullivan was in Melbourne helping a proud exiled group of Corkonians raise money for a good cause.

The Emer Casey Foundation Fun Run took place in both Melbourne and Youghal last Sunday and raises vital money for research into ovarian cancer.

PROC’s Ambassador-in-Residence in Melbourne Ms. Jennifer Ring presented a hurley and PROC t-shirt to the Cobh runner that was baptised in the River Lee and smeared with a chicken créole from KC’s in Douglas before being sent out to Oz by a fairly flahed carrier pigeon being ridden by an Echo boy.

Sonia is now back on Leeside and will take part in the Cork City Marathon on the June weekend.

Sonia in Melbourne making no secret about the fact that she won't be afraid to use it on anyone suspected of using drugs.

With a personal best of just 2hrs 29 minutes (the time it takes many of us just to get out of bed every morning) anyone thinking first prize is theirs might have to think again.

The Real Queen who not only took part and won the Melbourne race but allegedly started from the back and pursued participants tapping them on the arse with her new hurley as she passed issuing words of encouragement before zooming to the finishing tape.

The Real Queen

Following Emer's death in June 2006 the Casey family promised they would do all they could to help this research in the hope of securing a future of early detection of uterine/ovarian cancer.

The Emer Casey Foundation is currently sponsoring three Phd Fellowship students, whose focus is in the areas of chemo-resistance, cancer stem cells, circulating tumour cells and the body's immune response to cancer.

Participants in the Melbourne race point towards Cork which, interestingly
forms a direct straight line through Mecca.

The scientists have already identified a panel of proteins that can be identified in the blood of ovarian cancer patients. They have developed a near patient testing device to assess a patient's response to chemotherapy and are currently working on new ways to isolate circulating tumour cells in a patient's blood.

If you would like to help these amazing Corkonians and their noble cause you could donate €22 via this link. Gwan. Be sound. When Corkonians finally win the fight against ovarian cancer you can say you were part of the team!
