The Long Wait is Over

The long wait is over, and Cork City are back where they belong, champions of Ireland. It has been 12 long years since last City could make such a boast, and looking back at Fridays nights celebrations, the wait was worth it.

In the intervening years, one could be forgiven for calling City the bridesmaid of Irish professional football, finishing in the runners up spot no less than four times. Hence the sense of trepidation felt by most of the City in the build up to last Fridays all or nothing showdown. City have, after all, lost the league title on the last day of the season four times since 1991, and were in a similar situation in that year. That fateful Sunday afternoon, City had to play Dundalk, at The Cross, and not lose, in order to win their first title. Now, i'm not going to tell a tired tale again, and we all know Dundalk went back up to The Pale with their hands on the trophy. Was history about to repeat itself?
