Cork Culture Night: Friday Sept 19th


CULTURE NIGHT CORK 2008

Over thirty organisations will take part in Cork Cultural Night with the majority of the cultural buildings extending their opening hours to midnight and putting on once off free performances and events. Venues such as The Cork Opera House, The Crawford Art Gallery, The Everyman Palace, The Graffiti Theatre and The Cork School of Music are offering free guided tours of their premises.

Visitors can take a look behind the scenes at the City and County Archives and talk to a genealogist about tracing their family history. Cork Printmakers are offering people the opportunity to participate in screen printing while the Glucksman Gallery will screen famous extracts from films and are inviting members of the audience to act out the dialogue karaoke style.

A host of free readings, talks, poetry events, music performances and film screenings will take place all over the city. Art enthusiasts will be delighted to note the extended opening hours of all the city art galleries and for those interested in drama, The Granary Theatre are putting on two plays Beaten, and Thailand: Whats Love Got to Do with it while The Cork Arts Theatre are hosting an evening of entertainment with some of Cork’s finest talent taking part.

There is no better way to savour the delights of Cork than to wander around its streets. Events not to be missed are the innovative music walking tours which are being led by three of Cork’s most treasured musicians, John Spillane, Camille O’Sullivan and Cara O’Sullivan. These unique tours will take people to places in Cork that are most important to the musicians and that have influenced their music. Pre booking of the music walking tours is essential. For those looking for something more energetic, William Hammond, founder member of the Cork Singers Group will lead cyclists through the city stopping at important historical sites and singing songs connected to the events and buildings along the route.

Spillane: pure Cork.

Meeting at 7pm outside the National Monument on the Grand Parade it is important to bring your bike to the cycle tour. The architectural walking tour is a must for those interested in architecture as the tour explores the varied buildings and places which contribute to our cultural heritage. A special competition is also being run in conjunction with 96FM where listeners will be given the opportunity to take part in a unique boat tour of Cork.

Culture Night is open to all ages and there are a wide range of events catering for children. From 4-7pm face painters and clowns will help children take over the Cork City Council Chamber while the Everyman Palace is a must for all kids if they want to meet Red Riding Hood and her friends.

The majority of the venues are all within walking distance of each other and from 7-10pm Bus Eireann will provide free buses which will follow an orbital route and will take people all over the city visiting venues such Blackrock Castle Observatory where astronomers will be on hand to assist in the viewing of the moon and stars and/or The Lifetime Learning Lab who will host a series of talks on the history of the old Cork waterworks. Visitors can hop on and off the buses at any point and poets will entertain these passengers as they travel around the city by bus.
